Red Deer Polytechnic is proud to present The Nutcracker
Community collaborations foster festive spirit
Red Deer Polytechnic is continuing its magical holiday tradition by presenting Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker ballet through a host of matinee and evening performances.
“Once again, Red Deer Polytechnic is excited to profile the talent of central Alberta youth in The Nutcracker,” says Rodney Holt, Red Deer Polytechnic Associate Vice President, Academic Entrepreneurship. “Last year, since we could not hold in-person performances, we creatively shared the ballet through online video options. But this year, we are thrilled to welcome families and community members back into the Arts Centre as we safely host in-person performances.”
Audience members will be required to wear face coverings and to adhere to Red Deer Polytechnic’s vaccination program when they come to campus. Even with these measures, The Nutcracker is sure to help cultivate the holiday spirit throughout Red Deer and the surrounding communities.
“This classic ballet is a way to provide joyful entertainment and to bring the region together,” says Holt. “It truly is a collaborative effort between the Polytechnic, dancers and community members, and that’s what makes these performances so special.”
Adopting Tchaikovsky’s impeccable score throughout the performance, central Alberta youth will artistically recreate the legendary battle between mice and toy soldiers, which has delighted audiences for over a century.
When young Clara receives a cherished Nutcracker from her mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer, magical events begin to ensue when everyone goes to sleep. The Nutcracker is a holiday tradition that will inspire wonder among audience members as they immerse themselves in one of the most famous ballets of all time.
Members of Red Deer Polytechnic, central Alberta and the youth dancing community have safely and cooperatively prepared over countless hours to help recreate this classic holiday tradition in a series of unforgettable performances.
