RDC Career Services: Tools for career development in a virtual environment

Submitted by

It’s a tricky time for job seekers right now. Our economic environment paired with COVID-19 restrictions make it challenging to connect with potential employers and professional networks in traditional ways. Over the next 4 months, RDC Career Services will share tools and resources that can help you search for career opportunities in a virtual environment.

The Virtual Interview

Many professional workplaces have moved online entirely, and even those organizations doing business in person may prefer to connect with candidates for virtual interviews to limit traffic in the workplace. The Vector Impact shared this video of Don’t’s, and we’ve created a short list of Do’s to help you ace your video interview, online networking event or meeting.

Know your tech: Familiarize yourself with the platform that will be used for your interview. Never used Zoom before? Invite a friend to a practice meeting and make sure you know how use all of the features and settings before your interview. Open your computer and log in to the program at least 10 minutes before your interview so that you have time to troubleshoot any connectivity or technical issues.

Prepare your space: Use a well-lit room with minimal background noise and a neutral backdrop. Even if the only quiet room you can find is a bedroom, by positioning your camera right, no one would know it isn’t a home office. Close doors and windows to minimize distractions and interruptions.

Behave as you would in an in-person interview: Turn off your cell phone, dress and act professionally, and put your best foot forward. For tips on how to prepare for an interview, check out our RDC Career Services resources here
