All of us experience trauma at some point in our lives.  Trauma symptoms can show up in numerous ways and is rarely the same for each person.  RDP has created Trauma Informed Programming to equip citizens with tools to aid them in recognizing trauma, shifting to a trauma sensitive mindset with the overall goal of strengthening community resiliency.

RDP currently offers two programs: Building Resilience Through Trauma Awareness, which is community focused and Trauma Informed Workplace which is design for front-line employees who are working with the public daily and their managers.

An Introduction to Trauma: An understanding of trauma is essential to interacting with people in compassionate and effective ways.  Through this course, learners will gain an understanding of trauma, its prevalence, types, and effects.  Learners will explore their personal views and experiences with trauma and link this understanding to stigma, stereotypes, and their resulting impacts.

Trauma-Informed Practice: Trauma-informed practice can help people feel safe and supported. It can decrease the impact of trauma on their behaviour and help avoid re-traumatization.  While comparing trauma-informed practice with trauma-informed treatment, learners will explore the principles of trauma-informed practice and identify strategies for practicing in a trauma-informed way.

Substance Use and Trauma: The links between substance abuse and trauma are well documented.  Through an exploration of substance abuse, learners will gain an understanding of its impact on individuals, families, and communities.  Learners will explore warning signs, symptoms, prevention, and treatment and recovery of substance abuse and addiction.

Relationship Violence and Trauma: The impact and prevalence of relational violence are vast and often unseen.  In order to practice in a trauma-informed way, it is imperative to have an understanding of not only the signs and symptoms of relational violence but also the broad effects on health.  Learners will examine relational violence, its consequences, and strategies for engaging with people in compassionate and empathetic ways.

Conflict Resolution with Vulnerable Sectors: An understanding of conflict and how to resolve it is key to safe and effective work environments.  People who have experienced trauma are often vulnerable and conflict resolution strategies can be effective tools in maintaining safe and healthy workplaces. Learners will explore conflict and gain an understanding of its causes and impacts on relationships and productivity.  Through an examination of different strategies to resolve conflict, learners will develop skills that can be transferred to personal and professional relationships.

Resilience: An understanding of resilience and an awareness of how to foster it can contribute to trauma- informed practice as well as safer and healthier workplaces.  This course will guide learners through the concept of resilience and help them to identify strategies that foster resilience.  Learners will relate this understanding to empathy and compassion and develop skills to promote resilience in both themselves and others.
