UPDATE – February 16, 2022: Return to More in-Person Learning Starting February 28 & COVID-19 Protocols

Starting on Monday, February 28, Red Deer Polytechnic is pleased to resume more in-person course and service delivery.

Below are details outlining what to expect during the coming weeks:

ACADEMIC DELIVERY

  • Starting Monday, February 28, Red Deer Polytechnic will resume more in-person course and service delivery. A mix of online and HyFlex courses will also continue, for students who originally registered for courses offered through these delivery methods.
  • All students should review their class schedule now on TheLoop or in the Winter 2022 Timetable for information about their individual classes that will take effect starting Monday, February 28
    • Within the Timetable, please review the “Meeting Times” section that identifies details of each course, including class locations and other relevant information, noting the Start Date of February 28 (02/28/2022).

SERVICE DELIVERY

  • Services will continue to be delivered in-person and online, providing students with options of how to contact staff members. This includes services such as the Library, Academic Advising, Counselling Services, Health, Safety & Wellness Centre, Campus Store and more.
    • Please view the various service departments on Red Deer Polytechnic’s website to learn details specific to each area, as well as contact information.
  • Food Services will continue to be available, with Starbucks, FarSide Bar & Grill and The Lift Convenience Store open with reduced hours.

VACCINATION PROGRAM

After reviewing the Government of Alberta’s announcement on February 8, the following decisions have been made:

Now to February 27

Red Deer Polytechnic’s vaccination program will remain in place. This means:

  • All students and employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or submit negative rapid test results to the institution or have an approved exemption from RDP.
  • Free rapid testing clinic will continue to be held twice each week in the Cenovus Energy Learning Common on main campus. This service remains available to students and employees who need it, when attending in-person.
  • Proof of vaccination will not be requested of individuals who attend our institution in-person, as they arrive (no door checks will take place).

Starting February 28

Red Deer Polytechnic will end its COVID-19 vaccination program for all students, employees and visitors. This means:

  • Individuals will no longer be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, show proof of negative rapid test results or have an approved exemption to learn, teach or work at Red Deer Polytechnic.
  • As has always been the case, all students must continue to meet the vaccination requirements of governing bodies, agencies, organizations or other post-secondary institutions in which they may have their practicums, work-integrated learning activities or placements.

At Red Deer Polytechnic, we are a highly vaccinated community. This helps to protect us all as we move to the future. We thank students, faculty, staff and visitors for adhering to our institution’s vaccination program. We also thank the dedicated staff who have overseen the vaccination program.

HEALTH & SAFETY PROTOCOLS

Continuing from now until March 1, current COVID-19 protocols at Red Deer Polytechnic will be required. This includes:

  • Wearing face coverings at all times while indoors
  • Completing the daily health checklist on the SAFE RDP app before arriving
  • Maintaining a physical distance of at least two metres from others, whenever possible
  • Using good hygiene practices
  • Reporting illness if you have COVID-19 symptoms, have been in close contact with someone who tests positive, or have tested positive for COVID-19 yourself
  • Staying home if you are ill for any reason, as we all continue to play a role in helping to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Starting on March 1, following the Government of Alberta’s phased approach to easing public health measures, Red Deer Polytechnic will adapt its COVID-19 health and safety protocols. If the Government’s timeline of this phased approach changes, the implementation timing at RDP will align (and we will update the Polytechnic community accordingly).

Starting on March 1, the following updates to RDP’s health and safety protocols will begin:

Required

  • Stay home if you are ill for any reason, as we all continue to play a role in helping to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
  • Report illness if you have COVID-19 symptoms, have been in close contact with someone who tests positive, or have tested positive for COVID-19 yourself

Strongly Encouraged

  • Wear face coverings
  • Maintain a physical distance of at least two metres from others, whenever possible
  • Use good hygiene practices
  • Receive vaccinations and booster shots to help protect yourself and others against COVID-19

As we progress towards the future, everyone is responsible for assessing their own level of comfort and risk. Please respect the choices that others make. We will continue to follow public health measures while also making decisions with everyone’s health and safety as a priority.

Thank you for your continued diligence. Together, we can help ensure the rest of the Winter 2022 Term is a success in creating a consistent, respectful environment in which everyone can teach, learn, work and live.

UPDATE - February 10, 2022: Spectators permitted in-person for Athletics home competition

In light of the Government of Alberta’s announcement on February 8, effective immediately, spectators may attend Kings and Queens competition at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. Spectators can attend competition starting Thursday, February 10 at 6:00 pm to cheer in-person for our Kings and Queens teams.

Several health and safety protocols will be in place as the well-being of our students, employees and visitors remain a priority in our decision-making. View full details of this announcement on the RDP Athletics website

UPDATE - February 9, 2022: Red Deer Polytechnic Health & Safety Protocols Update

Effective immediately, individuals accessing Red Deer Polytechnic’s campuses and learning centres will no longer be required, or requested, to show proof of their vaccination records. This decision was made after considering the Government of Alberta’s announcement on February 8 regarding the province’s phased approach to easing public health measures.

We continue to plan for more in-person course and service delivery starting Monday, February 28.  We are still assessing how last evening’s announcement will affect our Polytechnic community and will keep you informed during the coming days.

All other COVID-19 protocols will remain in place at Red Deer Polytechnic’s campuses and learning centres, as we keep the health and safety of those in our Polytechnic community at the forefront of our decision-making and operations. The continuing health and safety protocols for everyone who attends our campuses and learning centres include:

  • Face coverings required at all times while indoors
  • Completing the daily health checklist on the SAFE RDP app before arriving
  • Maintaining a physical distance of at least two metres from others, whenever possible
  • Using good hygiene practices
  • Reporting illness if you have COVID-19 symptoms, have been in close contact with someone who tests positive, or have tested positive for COVID-19 yourself
  • Please stay home if you are ill for any reason, as we all continue to play a role in helping to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Free rapid testing clinics will continue to be held twice each week in the Cenovus Energy Learning Common on main campus. This will help to ensure that this service remains available to those within our Polytechnic community who need it.

While we understand everyone is tired of the pandemic and the strain it has taken on us, we appreciate everyone’s continued diligence to adhere to RDP’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

As we monitor the dynamic situation presented by COVID-19, in the coming days and weeks we will continue to update our students, faculty, staff and community as further decisions are made with respect to our operations and health and safety protocols at Red Deer Polytechnic.

UPDATE – January 18, 2022: Online Learning & Service Delivery Continues Until February 27

With the ongoing spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant, Red Deer Polytechnic has determined that the best way to keep our campus community healthy and safe is to continue primarily with online learning and service delivery until February 27. We intend to resume more in-person learning and services starting February 28, following Reading Break. This is consistent with the approach that many Alberta post-secondary institutions have announced, following advice from Alberta Health Services.

We recognize that this news will be welcome to some and disappointing to others. Our intention is always to best serve the collective needs of our students, employees and all those on our campuses. With this information, our students and employees will have the ability to plan ahead during the Winter term, as we recognize the strain that sudden shifts create. We believe that this decision will help to mitigate spread of COVID-19 between members of our campus community and our larger community, while also protecting the healthcare system.

Please note the following important details:

ACADEMIC DELIVERY

  • Most courses, labs and seminars will continue to be delivered online.
    • Programs that are currently being delivered in-person (as identified here) will continue with this delivery method.
      • In addition, to ensure students can achieve identified learning outcomes in their courses or programs, the following programs will shift to in-person delivery starting Monday, January 24
        • Engineering Technologies
        • Occupational and Physical Therapist Assistant
        • Pharmacy Technician
        • Some additional labs, studios and shops in other programs will also be delivered in-person, starting January 24.
        • Instructors will contact students to inform them of any updates to course delivery method.

  • All changes to classes will be reflected in the Winter 2022 Timetable by 4:30 pm on Friday, January 21. Within the Timetable, review “Meeting Times” and “Delivery Method” columns for details of each course.
    • All students should check their class schedule on TheLoop or in the Winter 2022 Timetable for updated information relevant for their individual classes that will take effect starting Monday, January 24.
    • For students who have previously downloaded their schedule to their calendar, these delivery methods or location changes will not be reflected. You will need to download a new schedule for updated information.

  • Starting February 28, our intention is to resume Red Deer Polytechnic’s Winter 2022 Term Timetable, which will be updated accordingly at that time, with a mix of in-person, online and HyFlex course delivery.

SERVICE DELIVERY

  • Starting Thursday, January 20, Athletics competition will resume as scheduled.
  • No spectators will be permitted at practices and games, until further notice. Select games will be broadcast online through ACAC TV for fans to continue to show support for our Kings and Queens.
  • Just as some courses and programs remain in-person so students can achieve identified learning outcomes, we believe that for student-athletes to thrive in their chosen sport, they must be involved in some level of in-person applied skill development for continued learning and development.
  • With enhanced COVID-19 protocols and the institution’s vaccination program in place, the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and Athletics staff remains paramount.

VACCINATION PROGRAM – RAPID TESTING CLINICS CONTINUE ON MAIN CAMPUS

  • For continuing and returning students and current employees who are not fully vaccinated and who attend main campus in-person for any purpose, free rapid testing clinics will continue to be hosted on main campus now through February 24.

UPDATE – December 22, 2021: Winter Term to Temporarily Start Online

Following discussions with Alberta Health Services, Red Deer Polytechnic will begin our Winter 2022 Term temporarily online (from January 4 to 23), with the intent to return to more in-person course delivery and other operations starting on January 24. This decision was made with everyone's safety and the future of in-person engagement in mind.

We are monitoring the current COVID-19 situation presented by the Omicron variant, including its high transmissibility. Many Alberta post-secondary institutions are starting their winter terms primarily online to allow our campus communities the time we need to assess the potential impact, especially after the holiday season.

By doing our part to reduce the number of people on our campuses and learning centres, we can allow for those who must be in-person to continue, while also helping to support our healthcare system.

We will be implementing the following temporary safety measures:

ACADEMIC DELIVERY – temporary measures

  • From January 4 to 23, most courses, labs and seminars will be delivered online.
    • Exceptions where learning outcomes require in-person engagement will be permitted, including shops, labs, practicums and clinical placements. Details below:
      • Apprenticeship (Shops)
      • Animation and Visual Effects
      • Bachelor of Science, Nursing (Clinical Placements)
      • Health Care Aide (Labs at RDP’s downtown campus in Millennium Centre)
      • Medical Lab Assistant (Labs)
      • Practical Nurse (Clinical Placements)
      • Welding (Testing)
      • CPR Training
      • Visual Art
  • Instructors will communicate with students (via Blackboard or other platforms they have introduced) as soon as possible to share information regarding course work and other details for each course, lab, and seminar.
  • Starting January 24, we aim to resume Red Deer Polytechnic’s Winter 2022 Term Timetable, as currently published, with a mix of in-person, online and HyFlex course delivery.
  • The last day to add or drop classes for Winter 2022 Term is January 12, 2022. Questions? Email: admissions [at] rdpolytech [dot] ca. Please note that RDP is closed starting at noon on December 24 and will re-open on January 4 at 8:30 am.

SERVICE DELIVERY – temporary measures

  • From January 4 to 23, limited in-person services will be provided at our campuses and learning centres. Services will also be accessible online.
  • Starting January 24, a greater number of services will be provided in-person to accommodate more in-person traffic at our campuses and learning centres. Services will continue to be accessible online.
  • Please view Red Deer Polytechnic’s website and service department social media platforms for contact information and other details you may require about a particular service.

Starting the Winter Term online is not a preferred course of action for anyone. We recognize the strain these quick changes create for our students, faculty and staff. However, this temporary shift to online delivery will help to keep everyone in our campus community as safe as possible and assist to reduce the spread of this virus in our communities.

HEALTH & SAFETY PROTOCOLS

The Polytechnic’s vaccination program, in addition to everyone adhering to health and safety protocols, will continue to keep our campus community as safe of an environment as possible during the pandemic.

  • NEW: To assist with contact tracing efforts for the Winter Term, we have decided that before arriving at our campuses or learning centres all employees and students must continue to complete the “COVID-19-AB Health Daily Verification” form that is found on the SAFE RDC app.
  • Starting January 1, 2022, Red Deer Polytechnic requires digital vaccination verification for students and employees who attend any activities on our campuses or learning centres. If you haven’t yet, you must upload your vaccination record on the SAFE RDC App now. Upon verification by RDP, you will receive an approved, Red Deer Polytechnic-specific QR code.
    • You will need to activate your RDP email to be able to upload your vaccination record. This can be done by logging into TheLoop and clicking on the “Email” icon in the top banner.
  • Rapid testing clinics will be hosted on main campus from January 4 to 20, for those individuals who are not fully vaccinated, and for those who are eligible to complete rapid testing (as per RDP’s vaccination program). View more details

We will continue to keep our campus community informed as we adapt our operations, as needed, based on the dynamic situation presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Ongoing Health & Safety Protocols

The health and safety of our students and employees continues to be at the forefront of our decision-making.

Red Deer Polytechnic continues to strongly recommend that all members of our campus community receive COVID-19 vaccinations. COVID-19 vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect ourselves and our families and communities from this virus. According to the Government of Alberta and other trusted sources, evidence indicates that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19 and variants.

As previously announced, many health and safety protocols will continue to be in place at Red Deer Polytechnic’s campuses and learning centres for the Winter & Spring 2022 Terms (January 1 to June 30, 2022), including students and employees staying home if they are ill for any reason and reporting illnesses to the institution.

The various protocols we have implemented, including the vaccination program, are done with the intent to create a safe environment for our Polytechnic community. These protocols are seen as critical to maintaining a consistent in-person teaching and learning environment, while still providing virtual options for online learners, wherever possible.
