Michael Chi

Instructor

Biography

Michael is a mathematics instructor with a background in applied mathematics. He completed his Bachelor and Master of Science in Applied Mathematics at the University of Alberta before he started teaching at Red Deer Polytechnic in 2017.

During his undergraduate studies, he discovered the applications of mathematics across many different science disciplines including biology, chemistry, physics and computing science which led him to pursue a Masters in Applied Mathematics. He received a graduate student teaching award from the University of Alberta for recognition of excellence in the performance of teaching assistant duties.

Michael’s research area was focused on modeling the dynamics and optimal control of flexible solar updraft towers which provides an alternative for generating electricity from solar radiation using Lagrangian mechanics and differential equations. He is one of the coinventors for a US patent which describes the design and active optimal control of free-standing, inflatable solar towers.

Michael has experience teaching introductory calculus, linear algebra, differential equations and statistics courses at RDP and at the University of Alberta. He enjoys sharing his passion and enthusiasm for learning and teaching mathematics with a focus on real-world applications.
