What is Dual Credit?

Dual credit is optional career-based high school programming. It can assist students in making meaningful transitions to post-secondary education or the workplace. School authorities have the flexibility to develop and implement dual credit programming that provides students with relevant learning experiences. 

Is Dual Credit a Good Fit for Me?

Consider how you learn best and if the course delivery method will work well for you. Are you self-motivated? Can you keep yourself on track? If you feel like this course is a good fit for you contact your school administrator or counselor to find out more.  

What can I expect?
With online asynchronous learning you will be able to access course information any time which will ensure that this program will fit into your high school schedule.
How to apply?
To register for this program, you must be a high school student enrolled in one of our partner school divisions. Please speak to your high school guidance counsellor about how to enroll in this program.

Fall Courses

PSYC 1001 – Principles of Psychology I

When:  September 23, 2024 - December 13, 2024

Why would I want to take this course? 

Are you interested in learning about how our brains work? This course can be used towards the completion of a Bachelor of Arts or Science in Psychology degree program as well as can be taken as an elective for many other programs. Please refer to your program of interest to see the minimum grade requirement for this course. 

Course Description: 

Discover the fundamental terminology, procedures, findings and theories related to basic psychological processes. Explore the history and nature of psychology and research methods in this field. 

Learn about the psychological and biological foundations of behaviour, sensation and perception, consciousness, learning, memory, language and thought.

KNSS 1210 - Personal Fitness and Wellness

When:  September 23, 2024 - December 13, 2024

In Person Commitment: This course is mostly online, asynchronous however there is a requirement to attend an in-person lab orientation.

Why would I want to take this course? 

If you are interested in developing a healthy lifestyle and learning about what factors influence your overall fitness and wellness, this course may be of interest to you! This course can be used towards the completion of a Kinesiology & Sports Studies Diploma, a Justice Studies Diploma, as well as can be taken as an elective for many other programs. Please look at the program of interest to see the minimum grade requirement for this course.

Course Description:  

An exploration and application of the foundations of health, wellness and fitness from a personal perspective. Theory and practical strategies are used to empower the student in developing a healthy active lifestyle.

HSCI 1115 - Biology for Health Professions

When: September 23, 2024 - December 13, 2024

Requirements: Students must have Bio 20 completed to enroll. 

Why would I want to take this course? This may be a good fit for you if you want to learn more about body systems and functions but are unsure of what particular Health Care related program you would like to apply to for post-secondary. This course can only be used as credit towards the Pre-Health Sciences Certificate.  

Course Description: Examine human biology from a microscopic to macroscopic level. Describe homeostasis and the function of cells within the body.

If you are interested in exploring a career in a health care related field but are not sure what you would like to study, enrolling in this course will give you credit towards the Pre-Health Sciences Certificate. The Pre-Health Sciences certificate allows you to discover what areas of health care you are most interested in. This HSCI 1115 is not recommended for students that already have a program in mind that they would like to apply for outside of this certificate.

With the completion of the Pre-Health Sciences Certificate students can potentially get into the following programs:

  • Medical Lab Assistant Certificate 
  • Occupational and Physical Therapist Assistant Diploma
  • Pharmacy Technician Diploma

PSYC 1002 – Principles of Psychology II

When:  March 3, 2025 –May 23, 2025

Prerequisite: PSYC 260 or PSYC 1001

Why would I want to take this course? 

Did you enjoy taking Principles of Psychology I? If so, this course is right for you! Principles of Psychology II takes a deeper dive into exploring behaviour. This course can be used towards the completion of a Bachelor of Arts or Science in Psychology Degree program as well as can be taken as an elective for many other programs. Please look at the program of interest to see the minimum grade requirement for this course. 

Course Description: 

Identify fundamental terminology, procedures, findings, and theories related to individual, social, and abnormal behaviour. Topics may include intelligence, problem solving, creativity, motivation and emotion, lifespan development, personality, psychological disorders and treatments, health, stress and coping, and social behaviour.

SOCI 1260 – Introductory Sociology

Are you interested in learning about social interaction? This course can be used towards the completion of a University Arts Diploma or a University Transfer: Bachelor of Arts in Sociology degree as well as can be taken as an elective for many other programs. Course Description:  

Introduce sociological perspectives, methods and concepts used to analyze social behaviour. Examine how culture, socialization, institutions, and interactions have an impact on social life.

NURS 1215 - Human Anatomy

When: March 3, 2025 – May 23, 2025

Requirements: Must be in grade 11 or 12 and have completed Bio 30 to enroll.  Students must be academically strong as this course has a high minimum grade requirement. 

Why would I want to take this course? If you want to learn more about the different structures and functions within the human body and are interested in potentially pursuing a career in nursing, this course may be a good fit for you! This course can be used towards the completion of a Practical Nurse Diploma, or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Collaboration with the University of Alberta. The minimum grade to utilize this course towards nursing is a 75%.

Course Description: NURS 1215 is an introductory human anatomy course. It will provide students with an understanding of the normal structure of the human body, how this structure provides the basis for the function and how this may be disrupted during the diseased state.

ELCC 1213 - Interpersonal Relations

Early Learning and Child Care

When:  March 3, 2025 – May 23, 2025

Why would I want to take this course? 

Are you interested in improving your communication skills to become more employable? Are you interested in perusing a career in Early Learning and Child Care? This course goes over how to navigate different forms of communication and is a required course for the completion of an Early Learning and Child Care Certificate or Diploma. Other programs may except this as an elective. Please look at your program of interest to see the minimum grade requirement for this course.

Course Description: 

An introduction to self-understanding and self-acceptance as the basis of a professional's ability to understand and value others. Gain knowledge of how communication strategies and skills influence practice.
