Biography

Olga completed a Ph.D. in Microbiology in 2005, where she investigated biosorption and bioaccumulation processes of copper, lead and hexavalent chromium ions by yeast of various taxonomical groups. Her postdoctoral research focused on the analysis of the role of carotenoid pigments in hexavalent chromium tolerance, biosorption and bioaccumulation by pigmented yeast and its mutants.

She received her second Master’s in Bioresource and Food Engineering at the University of Alberta in 2017. Her research focused on the characterization and application of value-added opportunities of the liquid outlet by-product streams of the Forge Hydrocarbons pilot plant that produces hydrocarbon-based renewable fuels at the Advanced Energy Research Facility in Edmonton.

After completing her Master’s degree, Olga worked in the private sector as a Senior Microbiologist, where she coordinated and planned microbiology laboratory activities, provided direction and consultation for the improvement of the process flow and method development and validation.  She was responsible for overseeing laboratory biosafety as a Biosafety Officer while ensuring that the microbiological laboratory meets quality, regulatory and accrediting agency compliance.

Olga became the Science Laboratory Manager & Biosafety Officer at Red Deer Polytechnic in 2020. Currently, she is a Registered Biosafety Officer with the Canadian Association for Biological Safety. On top of this, she is also an Animal Care Lead at Red Deer Polytechnic where she ensures the safety, quality and compliance of the biosafety and animal care standards and protocols.
