National Indigenous History Month

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada where we honour and recognize the rich histories, cultures and ways of life of First Nations, Inuit and Métis.

Join the celebration this June by participating in on-campus events and initiatives, which include a Quiet Book Club Discussion, to learn more about and foster a deeper understanding of Indigenous heritage and traditions.

June 1 – 30 – Social Media Features

June 1 - 30 | Instagram

Follow @rdp_indigenous and @yoursardp throughout June as we feature prominent Indigenous People in Canada. Every week in June, we will share inspiring stories and achievements of some of Canada's most influential Indigenous People, highlighting their impact and contributions to culture and society.

June 1 – 30 – Bulletin Board Display

June 1 - 30 | Main Campus

Visit the bulletin board displays by Counselling Services (across Room 1402) and Campus Health and Wellbeing Services (across Room 901) and explore the inspiring journeys of prominent Indigenous People - leaders, artists, activists and more.

June 12 – Quiet Book Club Discussion: Moon of the Crusted Snow

June 12 | 12 – 1 pm | Room 913C

We invite you to read the current book club selection Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice.

Join us in person on June 12 for a lunchtime conversation to share how the book has impacted you personally or professionally.

Moon of the Crusted Snow was recommended by RDP's Vice President Academic & Student Experience, Lindsay Engel:

“Moon of the Crusted Snow is an Indigenous horror set in the Canadian North. This engaging narrative talks about leadership and survival and has excellent character development, including perspectives from two indigenous College students. I devoured this book because of its storytelling and suspense, but I appreciate it for sharing Indigenous ways of knowing.”
— Lindsay Engel, RDP Vice President Academic & Student Experience

Learn more about Moon of the Crusted Snow on the Quiet Book Club guide.

June 17 – 24 – Book Display

June 17 - 24 | Library

We invite you to explore a curated book collection celebrating Indigenous Cultures and People.

June 21 – Exterior Light Display at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

June 21 | Exterior Lights at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

Celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day, the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre lights will proudly shine red, white, blue, black and yellow. These colours honour Treaty 6, Treaty 7 and Métis Nations.

Red Deer Polytechnic recognizes that our campus is situated on Treaty 7 land, the traditional territory of the Blackfoot, Tsuut'ina and Stoney Nakoda peoples, and that the central Alberta region we serve falls under Treaty 6, traditional Métis, Cree and Saulteaux territory. We honour the First Peoples who have lived here since time immemorial, and we give thanks for the land where RDP sits. This is where we will strive to honour and transform our relationships with one another.
