Alumni Association hosts festive gathering highlighting local food & beverage culture

Students enrolled in Red Deer Polytechnic's new Culinary Arts Diploma prepared food samples for guests at Palate: A Taste of Local. 

More than 350 central Albertans enjoyed an elegant event at Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) on October 24, tempting their tastebuds with a variety of food and beverages from diverse local vendors.

Spirits were high as people gathered for RDP’s annual signature event, Palate: A Taste of Local.  

Palate vendors from across central Alberta offered guests a variety of food items, including sweet, savoury and international dishes. 

Guests also enjoyed sampling various small batch spirits, craft beer and soda, hand-crafted cocktails and mocktails, and other beverages.  

Event attendees enjoyed the evening’s experiences which included meeting the chefs, makers, owners and mixologists that bring these food and beverage flavours to life, while networking with RDP alumni and other guests. 

Attendees also enjoyed live entertainment performed by local Soul, Jazz, Funk, and R&B band, Soul Balm, and viewing art created by the Polytechnic’s Visual Art students.

Palate: A Taste of Local was held in the Cenovus Energy Learning Common on RDP’s main campus, during the Polytechnic’s 60th anniversary Homecoming celebrations. Proceeds from “Palate: A Taste of Local” support various initiatives at Red Deer Polytechnic each year that are led by RDP’s Alumni Association, including student scholarships and awards.

RDP to host second annual Homecoming
Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) will welcome alumni, partners and community members to Homecoming from October 19 to 21, 2023. “We are proud to reconnect with RDP alumni and community members throughout Homecoming weekend and showcase the unique opportunities that our institution has to offer,” says Richard Longtin, Associate Vice President, External Relations. “In RDP’s 60-year history, the institution has evolved into a premier polytechnic that provides exceptional education, training and applied research opportunities. Alumni, partners, students and members of the public will have the opportunity to partake in a variety of academic, athletic, cultural and social events on the Polytechnic’s main campus over three days. RDP wins awards for alumni initiatives
RDP wins two national awards for alumni initiatives
Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) received two awards from the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE). In the annual Prix d’Excellence, Palate: A Taste of Local received silver in the Best Alumni Event category and the RDP Athletics Brand Reveal video received bronze in the Best Video – Announcements category. The CCAE is a national network of post-secondary professionals in advancement disciplines including advancement services, alumni relations, communications and marketing, fundraising (development), external relations and public relations. Members include representatives from universities, colleges, polytechnics and other schools from across Canada. The Prix d’Excellence awards are selected by volunteer panels that are comprised of CCAE members. “Palate: A Taste of Local is the RDP Alumni Association’s annual signature event. The event is driven by alumni and student volunteers to plan and deliver, so this award is especially meaningful for us,” says Courtney Avram, Chair of the RDP Alumni Association Board of Directors. “Palate builds on the rich history of the Fine Wine and Food Tasting event, which ran for 16 years. RDP community raises funds to support students
Through several recent initiatives, the Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) community continues to support students in diverse and impactful ways. The Polytechnic has launched its second annual Sweaters for Scholarships campaign to support student scholarships. Donations that are made to this festive campaign will help to ease students’ financial constraints as they pursue their personal and professional aspirations. While supporters can contribute to student awards and scholarships throughout the year, the Sweaters for Scholarships campaign will conclude on December 15, which is National Ugly Sweater Day. For every $10 donation to the Sweaters for Scholarships campaign, individuals will receive an entry into a draw for one-of-five custom made Red Deer Polytechnic holiday sweaters which were created by RDP alum owned Slash Sports. “Through the generosity of our alumni, partners, employees and members of our communities, Red Deer Polytechnic offers more than $1 million in awards and scholarships to students annually,” says Richard Longtin, Associate Vice President, External Relations. “These contributions help to educate and train the workforce, addressing labour market demand and contributing to the economic growth of Alberta.” At its recent Annual General Meeting, the RDP Alumni Association presented $10,000 to the Students’ Association (SA) of RDP Student Food Bank
