RDP Acknowledges Impactful Contributions From Employees at the 2025 Awards of Excellence

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) is celebrating faculty and staff who have made extraordinary contributions serving students, the institution and communities during the past year at RDP’s 2025 Awards of Excellence.
The Awards of Excellence are given annually by the post-secondary institution as formal recognition for remarkable contributions from faculty and staff that extend beyond their job requirements. These contributions may be through innovation, leadership, excellence in service or teaching, making a positive impact at the institution, in communities or in their profession.
This year, RDP received 31 nominations of faculty and staff from across the institution in six categories:
Innovation
Deanna Morin, Marketing and Promotions Strategist, Continuing Education and Corporate Training (CECT), has explored and implemented creative solutions in her role that help amplify the marketing and recruitment efforts for CECT camps, courses and programs. This has helped provide a range of learning opportunities for youth and adults.
As a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) instructor, Raigne Symes has made a lasting impact on nursing education through her innovative use of AI, high-flex delivery and experiential learning. She fosters an inclusive, tech-forward environment that enhances student engagement, wellness and success.
Leadership
Kristin Edgar, Operations and Business Applications Manager, Continuing Education and Corporate Training, has helped to enhance student experiences, drive innovation and create significant institutional impact through her effective leadership, advocacy and commitment to RDP’s values.
Daphne Kennedy, Practical Nurse instructor, has helped advance hands-on learning, simulation and support for faculty which has enriched RDP’s Nursing program. Additionally, her adaptability, advocacy and commitment to institutional initiatives have made her a valued and impactful contributor to student success and the community.
Danielle Marcus, Operations Manager, Career Education and Experience Development (CEED) Centre, has been a forward-thinking leader who blends deep institutional knowledge with innovation and strategic growth, supported by her lifelong learning. She has built connections through initiatives like team retreats and activities, while consistently showing integrity, empathy and courageous leadership.
Kristine Plastow, Associate Vice President, Student Experience, has fostered an inclusive campus by championing mental health, supporting diverse learners and collaborating with the Students’ Association of RDP. Her leadership in initiatives like Respect in the Workplace and Reading College has reflected her commitment to student success and community engagement.
As Director of Resource Planning and Client Services, Finance, Karen Walkley has provided knowledgeable and compassionate guidance. To foster effective change, she has simplified complex processes, supported colleagues with practical advice and fostered a welcoming, solution-focused environment.
Lee Yasinski, Welding instructor, has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to student success at Red Deer Polytechnic—through mentorship, skilled instruction, coaching Skills Canada competitors and academic research. His expertise and efforts have inspired apprentices and fellow educators to grow and reach their potential.
Service
As Student Information Systems Coordinator, Office of the Registrar, Travis Boblin has enhanced IT efficiency and student accessibility through his expertise and leadership in platforms such as Banner, MyCreds and MyRDP. Known for going above and beyond—resolving login issues and supporting courses—he has ensured a smooth, supportive online experience for students.
Rob Chilcott, Logistics Coordinator, Campus Management, has overseen key campus services and operations, ensuring smooth daily functioning and positive on-campus experiences. His strong communication skills, collaborative approach and commitment to customer service have made him a trusted and reliable colleague.
Lacey Fittes, Interim Operations Manager, Academic, School of Health and Wellness, has demonstrated a commitment to student success and institutional growth through leadership and cross-departmental collaboration at RDP. From refining faculty evaluations to driving enrolment, she has exemplified the institution’s core values of agility, bravery, connection and empowerment.
Shawna Jones, Interim Manager Compensation and Benefits, People and Culture, has led payroll operations at RDP with precision, strengthening employee support and institutional stability. Her innovative leadership has reflected the Polytechnic’s values and strategic goals, driving operational excellence and enhancing its reputation as an employer of choice.
Deanna Morin, Marketing and Promotions Strategist, has provided effective service to students, colleagues and stakeholders in the Continuing Education and Corporate Training Division. Through collaboration and innovative marketing campaigns, she has helped to advance RDP’s reputation as a leading provider of enhanced education and training opportunities.
Shauna Philip, Early Learning and Child Care instructor, has been an integral staff member at RDP, fostering student growth and advancing early learning programs through expert leadership and innovation. Her work, including program restructuring and effective course delivery, has exemplified a deep commitment to education and meaningful collaboration.
Nikki Sewell Lewis, Advisor, People and Culture, has been a passionate Human Resources leader at RDP, committed to inclusivity, professional growth and community engagement, especially for marginalized individuals. Her leadership in training, wellness and equity initiatives has inspired peers and enhanced Red Deer Polytechnic’s supportive culture.
Ruth Wandler, Procurement Coordinator, Finance, has played a key role in advancing RDP through her procurement expertise, leading major projects, improving processes and enhancing student experiences. Her calm leadership, collaboration and dedication have made her a trusted advisor across the institution.
Teaching
Dr. Jones Adjei, Humanities and Social Sciences instructor, has fostered student success through engaging teaching that connects theory to real-world applications and applied research. His mentorship and dynamic approach have inspired students to apply their learning beyond the classroom and pursue further education with confidence.
Sara Daniels, Bachelor of Science in Nursing instructor, was posthumously nominated for advancing student support, faculty development and nursing education. Her work with Alberta Health Services, inclusive teaching and support for neurodivergent learners have made her a key contributor to the success of learners, the Polytechnic and health care communities across the province.
As a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) instructor, Sarah Malo has profoundly shaped the BScN program through compassionate leadership, innovative teaching and inclusive curriculum development. Her contributions to faculty support and advocacy for Open Educational Resources have elevated student success and academic standards, making her a key asset to RDP and the nursing community.
Dr. Stephanie Powers, instructor, Donald School Business, is a dedicated educator at Red Deer Polytechnic who enhances learning through hands-on methods, technology and ethical AI use. Her skill in simplifying complex ideas and building practical skills have made her a valued role model and contributor to the academic community.
Wes Turney, an Animation and Visual Effects instructor, has fostered student engagement through team-based learning, creative projects and flexible delivery methods. His dedication to student success is evident in his accessibility, personalized support and willingness to go above and beyond, even outside of class hours.
Grace Taylor Memorial Award of Excellence
Instituted in 1987, the Grace Taylor Memorial Award of Excellence is awarded to a support staff member who embodies competence, humour, kindness, patience and understanding. This award is in remembrance of Grace Taylor, who was a valued employee at RDP for many years.
Caitlyn Charles, Placement Coordinator, Career Education and Experience Development (CEED), has contributed to a welcoming and efficient Polytechnic community by effectively collaborating with a variety of stakeholders, developing new processes and producing high-quality work.
Lacey Fittes, Interim Operations Manager, Academic, School of Health and Wellness, has leveraged her vast RDP experience to support colleagues and solve problems with efficiency. Known for boosting morale, she brings laughter, positive energy and dependable teamwork to every situation.
Lindsay Gustafson, Simulation Technician, School of Health and Wellness, has enriched simulation learning with creativity, patience and precision, while consistently celebrating team achievements and milestones. Her professionalism, humour and thoughtful approach have made her a valued and effective team member.
As Facilities Coordinator, Campus Management, Kathleen Lindsay’s calm, patient demeanor has been displayed in high-pressure situations, turning challenges into growth opportunities with her positive perspective. A skilled communicator, she has fostered collaboration across teams to ensure seamless operations at Red Deer Polytechnic.
Tammy Paylor, Program Assistant, School of Health and Wellness, has demonstrated patience, compassion and wit, making a strong impact at RDP. She has quickly earned the trust of colleagues through her attentive care and responsiveness. Known for her uplifting humor and warmth, Tammy has fostered positivity and efficient collaboration while consistently delivering exceptional work.
Wes Turney, an Animation and Visual Effects instructor, has brought dedication, foresight and genuine care to his role. His proactive planning, technical skill and collaboration have supported students, colleagues and industry. With a student-first approach and agile problem-solving, he has been a vital asset to academia and the Polytechnic community.
Sally Young has showcased dedication, professionalism and warmth in her role as Admissions and Registration Officer in the Office of the Registrar. She has eagerly supported students and staff with patience and kindness while exhibiting a high level of reliability and competence. Sally’s humour and welcoming demeanour have contributed to a positive environment at the Polytechnic.
Vicki Mix Administrative Excellence Award
The Vicki Mix Administrative Excellence Award is awarded to a support staff member who performs their duties in an exceptional fashion, demonstrates a commitment to personal and professional growth, cooperates with colleagues across RDP and fosters positive relationships with coworkers. This award is in remembrance of Vicki Mix, who was a dedicated employee at RDP.
Sarah Brown, Administrative Assistant, Student Supports, has demonstrated calmness, professionalism and a high level of knowledge. Her interpersonal skills have created a welcoming, confidential space for students, while her collaborative approach and thoughtful communication have enhanced operations and supported team cohesion.
Jennifer Foote, Program Assistant, School of Trades and Technology, has combined technical expertise with a user-focused mindset to support multiple schools through efficient documentation and innovative SharePoint solutions. Her passion for professional growth and knowledge-sharing has enhanced institutional workflows, while her confident collaboration and initiative have made her an indispensable staff member.
Breanna Mass, Operations Coordinator, Academic, Donald School of Business, has demonstrated the ability to identify and adopt efficient processes. With creativity and collaboration, she has supported students, faculty and staff, while her cross-campus engagement and professional growth have helped to advance the priorities of Red Deer Polytechnic.
