Demonstrating excellence across a variety of skilled trades, RDP apprentices earned two gold, three silver, and four bronze medals at this year’s event. In addition to the post-secondary success, RDP instructors also mentored two high school competitors—Ty McCartney (Carpentry) and Dane Schmidt (Welding)—who each earned gold in their respective categories.

“We are incredibly proud of the apprentices and students trained at RDP, whose dedication, hard work and talent were showcased at the Provincial Skills Canada Alberta Competition,” says David Pye, Dean of the School of Trades and Technology at Red Deer Polytechnic. “Their success is a testament to the commitment of our instructors, staff and industry partners, who have worked collaboratively to provide top-tier education and training. As Alberta’s third-largest provider of skilled trades education, RDP plays a vital role in developing talent, training more than 2,200 apprentices annually to help meet critical labour market demands across the province.”

Since 2003, RDP apprentices have accumulated 93 medals across Provincial, National, and WorldSkills competitions, highlighting the institution’s longstanding tradition of excellence in skilled trades education.

By providing robust hands-on training and fostering strong partnerships with industry, Red Deer Polytechnic continues to play a pivotal role in equipping students with high-demand skills that drive Alberta’s economic success and workforce sustainability.

Winners of the upcoming national competition will have the opportunity to represent Canada at the 48th WorldSkills Competition, scheduled to take place in Shanghai, China from September 22–27, 2026.

Central Alberta Collegiate Institute Looks to Strengthen Skilled Trades Workforce
A powerful partnership that is helping to build Alberta’s future skilled trades workforce, the Central Alberta Collegiate Institute (CACI), is providing practical learning that brings together K-12 and post-secondary learning with on-the-job opportunities to central Alberta middle and high school students. At a gathering at Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) today, CACI partners provided an information session and update to a group of educational partners, industry representatives and government officials. The Central Alberta Collegiate Institute focuses on providing skilled trades dual credit learning opportunities for middle school and high school students. 190 high school students participated in programming in 2023/2024, with almost 350 learners engaged in programs, so far, this year. Programming currently includes skilled trades exploration and pre-employment training within Heavy Equipment Technician, Welding, Industrial Mechanic and Automotive Services Technician programs for central Alberta students enrolled in grades 8 through 12. “This new Collegiate is allowing RDP to build capacity with local K-12 school divisions, Olds College of Agriculture & Technology and CAREERS to enhance dual credit programming in the region, creating pathways to post-secondary education and rewarding careers for central Alberta youth,” comments Stuart Cullum, President of RDP. “The CACI partners have a long history of working collaboratively together
