RDP's New Partnership Increases Accessibility for Firefighter Testing
Through a new partnership between Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) and Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES), aspiring LFES candidates can now complete their Firefighter Applicant Physical Test (FAPT) closer to home.
Previous LFES candidates had to complete the FAPT at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
“This partnership makes our hiring process more accessible and convenient for candidates,” says Cody Gundlock, Deputy Chief of Safety, Health and Wellness with LFES. “By reducing the travel burden and increasing testing options, we are breaking down barriers for prospective candidates and opening the door for more qualified individuals to join our team.”
As an innovative polytechnic institution, RDP provides enhanced education, training and applied research opportunities, helping to address the economic and social priorities of the province.
“We are thrilled to partner with Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services to offer this testing service,” says Sandra Liberty, Manager of Fitness and Support Services at Red Deer Polytechnic. “We are proud to contribute to the development of first responders across Alberta.”
While Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services plans to hire at least 14 new members this year, there is a demand for Fire and Emergency Services personnel across the province.
“Our education and training efforts to help fill positions in Alberta’s labour market, including in Fire and Emergency Services, are enhanced through collaborations,” says Trent Rix, Director of Ancillary and Sport Services at RDP. “With innovative facilities and knowledgeable staff, we are proud to offer this valuable testing service, contributing to the province’s skilled workforce and prosperity.”
The activities that comprise the FAPT are held in the Polytechnic’s Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. The seven stations include a cardiovascular fitness test, equipment carrying, hose drag, sled pull, forceable entry, victim rescue and ladder climb.
In addition to its collaboration with LFES, RDP announced a partnership in December 2023 with Red Deer Emergency Services to provide specialized third-party testing of the FAPT. This availability has allowed local, aspiring firemedics to conveniently complete the testing on the Polytechnic’s main campus.
