At an event earlier today, Red Deer Polytechnic celebrated its national and international recognition for the sustainability of its Studio Residence building.

Since 2019, the Polytechnic’s newest Residence building has received or contributed to RDP being honoured with five sustainability awards. This recognition includes the 2019 Canadian Wood Council Award, 2020 Prairie Wood Design Award: Industry Award of Excellence, 2021 Canada’s Clean 50 Top Project (www.clean50.com) and 2022 Canadian Green Building Award: Residence Large. The Studio Residence building was a contributor to RDP earning Colleges and Institutes Canada's (CICan) 2023 Excellence in Sustainable Development silver. The facility was also named a 2021/2022 International Union of Architects 2030 Award Finalist.

“At Red Deer Polytechnic, our Studio Residence building employs globally recognized sustainable technologies and contributes to our institution’s larger Alternative Energy Initiative,” says Jim Brinkhurst, Vice President, Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer of Red Deer Polytechnic. “While this innovative facility provides a modern living and social space for RDP’s learners, it also creates education and applied research opportunities for students to gather and analyze data about solar generation in the Alternative Energy Lab.”

The five-story building, which features 145 studio suites, including 19 barrier-free suites, is constructed to optimize solar exposure. It is clad with 545 vertical photovoltaic solar panels on the south, east and west outer walls. These solar panels produce more than 120,000 kWh of electricity annually which is equivalent to providing electricity for 55 homes for a year.

In addition to the photovoltaic solar panels, RDP’s Studio Residence building has several other features that help with energy conservation. It uses a high-performance building envelope to reduce heat loss and heat gain. The facility has a high-performance fiberglass frame, glazing window system, R-35 wall insulation and R-45 roof insulation. Low-flow plumbing systems are installed to reduce water consumption. While the Studio Residence building provides an abundance of natural light, low-energy LED lights are also used on-site.

To commemorate the recognition, the names of the awards and nominations are displayed on six panes of the Studio Residence building’s south-facing windows.

The Polytechnic’s Alternative Energy Initiative promotes a green campus by using energy-efficient technologies to reduce energy consumption. Red Deer Polytechnic’s Studio Residence building, and all components of its Alternative Energy Initiative, is part of the Polytechnic’s broader Green Campus Master Plan. This Plan incorporates and develops alternative energy systems that will provide learning and innovation opportunities for students and industry while reducing RDP’s carbon footprint.

The Green Campus Master Plan reinforces RDP’s commitment to become a net zero institution over the next decade, producing enough energy on the main campus to power its infrastructure. It also demonstrates the Polytechnic’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Red Deer Polytechnic recognized with Blue Skies Award
Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) is proud to have been awarded a Blue Skies Award from Parkland Airshed Management Zone (PAMZ) for taking exemplary measures to improve the air quality in the region. “As Red Deer Polytechnic, we are proud to be recognized for our innovation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to environmental health and the sustainability of communities,” says Mandeep Parmar, Director of Campus Management. “Through our Green Campus Master Plan, we are committed to a broad scope of sustainability, which includes enhancing air quality, and becoming a net zero energy institution by 2031.” Red Deer Polytechnic’s Green Campus Master Plan is comprised of six sustainability pillars that include emissions reduction, energy generation, energy storage, waste reduction, energy efficiency and educational opportunities. These pillars build upon previous RDP sustainability initiatives to conserve energy. In recent years, the Polytechnic has upgraded lights to more efficient LEDs, created the Alternative Energy Initiative, and installed 4,200 photovoltaic solar panels and a one megawatt (MW) Combined Heat and Power unit on main campus. In addition, RDP’s Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre received Gold Certification in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ( LEED) , a worldwide building certification program. The

RDP signs Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Accord
Red Deer Polytechnic has signed the United Nations SDG Accord , demonstrating its commitment to inspire, to celebrate and to advance the important role that education has in achieving sustainable development goals. The United Nations SDG Accord provides a framework where post-secondary institutions can collaborate and report on their contributions to sustainable development around the world. The 17 goals include the responsible use of resources, equality, sustainable economic growth, and commitment to innovation. “The signing of the SDG Accord is a meaningful day in the history of Red Deer Polytechnic. It is our way of demonstrating our commitment and contribution to their achievement and allows us to highlight the ways that we are making a difference toward global sustainability,” says Stuart Cullum, President of Red Deer Polytechnic. “As a polytechnic institution, we are dedicated to supporting the work of our industries and communities, through our education, training and applied research programming as well as how we develop and operate our campus and serve our community of faculty and staff”. While the Polytechnic is a leader among post-secondary institutions in environmental sustainability, it values all the goals. RDP receives international recognition at Green Gown Awards for sustainability initiatives
Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) has received international recognition as part of the 2023 Green Gown Awards for its efforts in energy innovation and emissions reduction. RDP was recognized with a Highly Commended Award in the 2030 Climate Action category (the only Canadian post-secondary institution in that category and one of only two Canadian finalists across all eight categories). The International Green Gown Awards are led by The Alliance for Sustainability Leadership in Education and are supported by the UN Environment Programme. “It is an honour to be recognized globally as a post-secondary leader in environmental sustainability and energy innovation,” says Stuart Cullum, President of Red Deer Polytechnic. “We will continue to collaborate with industry and communities in seeking innovative solutions to achieve both energy and climate security in Alberta and beyond.” The International Green Gown Awards , in association with Allianz Global Investors, were established in 2004. The Awards recognize the exceptional sustainability initiatives by post-secondary institutions around the world. This year, Red Deer Polytechnic was among 93 finalists from 25 countries that were nominated in eight categories. As a polytechnic, RDP acts as an innovation hub, where industry can leverage the applied research capabilities of its people and facilities
