Built around the concepts required to shine in this detail-driven field, our Medical Device Reprocessing program prepares you to write either the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management exam or the Canadian Standards Association exam to become a Certified Registered Central Service Technician.
In approximately 26 weeks, you’ll learn the science behind and techniques required for the precise skills of hospital instrument sterilization. You will become proficient in the cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of reusable medical equipment/devices in health care and personal service settings.
During a work-integrated learning opportunity, you’ll deepen your skills and understanding of what it takes to play an essential role in a healthcare team as a Medical Device Reprocessing technician.

Admission Requirements
Admission requirements for specific programs will often refer to Alberta Grade 12 course groups. Visit the Admission Requirements page for detailed group descriptions.
Eligibility for admission to the Medical Device Reprocessing program at Red Deer Polytechnic requires applicants to meet minimum academic requirements. Qualified applicants who meet all minimum requirements will be offered admission on a first-come, first-served basis.
Academic Requirements
Students applying to Medical Device Reprocessing must have a High School Diploma with:
ELA 30-1 or 30-2, or equivalent such as RDP ENGL 090 or 095
OR
Be 19 years or older with:
ELA 30-2, or equivalent
OR
Completion of a post-secondary English course or successful completion of a placement assessment. A minimum score of 251 on the Reading component of the Accuplacer and a 6+ on the WritePlacer is required.
OR
Completion of three post-secondary credit courses in the past five years
Additional Requirements
English Language Proficiency
Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English Language Proficiency (ELP) for admission to credit programs by providing official documentation to the Office of the Registrar at international.admissions@rdpolytech.ca or by regular mail, after an online application has been submitted.
All ELP tests must have been obtained within two years of the date their program starts. ELP requirements are in addition to the other admission requirements noted above.
Prior Learning and Transfer

Health & Safety
Health workers are responsible to attain and maintain required health and safety certifications and maintain recommended immunization standards.
For clinical and practicum placements, as a student of a Health program, you also are required to meet these standards of practice.
These health and safety requirements do not need to be submitted as part of your application. However, failure to submit the required documents will affect your progression in your chosen program.

Practicum
The second term of the Medical Device Reprocessing Certificate Program consists of a 400-hour full-time unpaid practicum placement in a working Sterile Processing Department. This hour requirement aligns with the certification requirements of HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) and CSA (Canadian Standards Association). All students must attend an assigned site within the province of Alberta for the duration of their practicum. Students will be responsible for coordinating their own travel and living arrangements and any associated costs. This placement occurs from the first week of May to mid-July.
Every effort is made to consider student preferences for practicum location. However, due to availability, students may be required to travel to locations outside of their preferences to complete the practicum requirements.
Indigenous Learners
Information for Indigenous Learners
The Medical Device Reprocessing Certificate program recognizes the need to facilitate access to post-secondary education for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners. To increase participation of Indigenous Peoples the program has designated three (3) seats for qualified applicants who are First Nations, Metis, or Inuit. After June 1 for the Fall term and October 1 for the Winter term unallocated seats will be released to qualified applicants on the waitlist if one exists for the program.
Indigenous applicants must meet the admission requirements for the program as outlined in the Academic Calendar and qualify for a designated seat by:
- Self-identifying as an Indigenous applicant on the Application for Admission.
- Providing proof of Indigenous ancestry
Proof of Indigenous ancestry (one of the following):
- Certified copy of a Status or Treaty card, Metis membership card, Nunavut Trust Certificate card, roll number or any other proof accepted by Inuit communities.
- Proof that an ancestor’s name has been entered in the Indian Register according to the Indian Act, band list of an individual band, or the Inuit roll.
- Written confirmation of Indigenous ancestry from Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada.
- Statutory Declaration by an applicant attesting to Aboriginal ancestry with supporting documentation.
Other forms of proof may also be considered at the discretion of the Registrar.
