Care That Counts

The Practical Nurse Diploma is a fast-paced program that will equip you with the knowledge and skills required to care for clients across various health care settings.

Train in high-tech simulation labs that feel like the real thing before heading into practicum placements where you’ll build confidence and real-world experience.

In this program, you’ll dive into courses where you’ll learn the basics of patient care, practice checking vitals and spotting health concerns. You’ll understand how medications work and build your confidence as a future nurse. With hands-on labs, clinical placements, and real-world scenarios, you’ll graduate ready to care, lead, and make a difference—starting day one.

After graduation, you'll be able to take the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.

This program is offered in several communities across central Alberta, utilizing online and face-to-face delivery methods, thanks to our partnership with Campus Alberta Central.

RDP has also partnered with Prairie College to offer this program in Three Hills. If you choose this path, please apply through Prairie College.

Additional Requirements

Prior Learning Accelerated Pathway

Nursing courses from other programs will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis for prior learning. Students transferring into the program or who have been out of the clinical area for an extended period of time may be required to pass a competency screen before admission to the program.

Already trained? Fast-track your future.
If you’re an internationally educated nurse, a trained healthcare professional, or a Canadian with a recent credential, this accelerated pathway helps you to complete the Practical Nurse program at an accelerated pace.

How it works:
If you’ve earned a credential in the last 10 years, you can apply to the PNPL Cohort. You’ll complete assessments and provide documentation to show what you already know to get credit for the Year One courses and jump straight into Year Two.

Successful applicants will get an individual course registration plan based on PLAR results. If you don’t pass an assessment, you can still take the course at regular tuition rates.

How to apply
When applying to the Practical Nurse program, check the box that says you want to be considered for the Prior Learning Accelerated Pathway. The registrar’s office will follow up with the next steps.
